 The Interpreter Training Program prepares students with American Sign Language and interpreting skills, a comprehensive understanding of the interpreter’s role and responsibilities, theoretical skills in interpreting, and practical experience in interactive settings.

Academic Pathways

The Interpreter Training Program has an articulation agreement with Kean Ocean. Students who graduate from Ocean County College’s Interpreter Training Program can transfer those 60 program credits to Kean Ocean and be able to earn a BA degree in Communications. American Sign Language – English Interpreting, Associate in Applied Science

The AAS in American Sign Language-English Interpreting program prepares students to interpret English into ASL and ASL into English.
Students who successfully complete ASLN 100: American Sign Language I and ASLN 103: American Sign Language II will be admitted into the program. Students who transfer into the program from other institutions must first meet with the Program Chair for skills assessment in order to determine placement.

Faculty Biography

Kathy Basilotto, Program Chair and Assistant Professor in the Interpreter Training Program is one of ten children. Six of her siblings were born profoundly deaf, and she is a native signer. Her experience growing up in this unique family was the impetus for her to earn her national certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Kathy has interpreted for over 38 years and has worked in various venues such as theatre arts, concerts, video relay interpreting, and more. Kathy developed and implemented the Interpreter Training Program in 2002. Since then, alumni from the program interpreted for President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and Governor Chris Christie – to name a few.
